Is 2018 the year of the farmhouse? Builder magazine says so, and our national crush on modern farmhouse style seems to grow stronger every day. HGTV’s Fixer Upper series may have sparked the trend, but it’s easy to understand its widespread appeal.
This modern style offers classic good looks, open spaces and a casual, comfortable feel. The farmhouse-style home above that Hensley Custom Building Group recently completed for a client, is a perfect example.
The home’s great room combines an open kitchen, a center-stage fireplace and an easy connection to outdoor living. Perfect for families, the plan, designed by Studer Residential Designs, also provides a mudroom with a mail desk and a spacious pantry nearby.
Sliding Barn Doors
The hallmarks of this style include sliding barn doors between rooms, exposed beams and shiplap paneling on ceilings or walls. Furniture with a well-worn patina and muted rugs add to the “settled in” feel that’s welcoming and warm.
Modern Farmhouse Kitchen
In the kitchen of a modern farmhouse, look for white cabinetry, subway tile with dark grout, an apron sink and plenty of room for casual dining—either at a breakfast bar or a long farm table.
Modern Farmhouse Exterior
Outside, modern farmhouses are often white with clapboard siding or painted brick. Metal roofing on classic gable roofs suits the style. You’ll find large windows with dark frames, dormers and of course, an inviting front porch–complete with swing–that exudes classic Americana.
