Beyond Popcorn: The Latest Home Theater Trends

While we all spent a lot of time watching Netflix in 2020, today’s home theaters aren’t just about the movies. Here are a few home theater trends for 2021.

Multifunctional Spaces

Some custom home buyers can allocate space solely for watching the big screen, but others want a home theater space to do more: Comfortable seating that is moveable allows for open space where the kids (and grownups) can play video games. Yogis can use floor space for practicing yoga or meditation along with on-screen classes or not. A room that can do more is one of the latest home theater trends.

Many of our clients combine the theater with a golf simulator. The simulator’s large screen is perfect for practicing your swing and watching or streaming videos. Another of the hot home theater trends is to outfit the space with a spin bike.

Lighting, Sound and Furniture

To get that true theater experience, a media room should be almost completely dark. Flexible lighting, another of this year’s home theater trends, allows for different light levels to go along with a variety of room uses. Having people over to eat and watch a game? Brighter light adds to the event. For yoga, video games or meditation, you might prefer dimmed lights.

You can have fun with lighting, too, by installing programmable fixtures with color capabilities. Choose team colors for game day, soft colors for rom-com viewing or a mix for tween dance parties. Talk with us or your lighting designer about including dimmable fixtures in areas like bars, kitchenettes or serving islands where task lighting is important.

Whether you’re watching a blockbuster, leveling up on Mario Kart or just relaxing to music, the sound system in your home theater is key. Many of our clients work with Legacy Custom Entertainment to incorporate all the sound and video technology required in today’s home theaters: from big screens to video walls to surround sound.

Theater seats are fun and give you the feel of being at the cinema. If you go this route, consider installing them stadium style so that back rows can see over seats in front. Sectionals and other traditional lounge furniture are popular now in home theaters, too. These seating options allow you to use the space for game nights or conversation.

Design and Home Theater Trends

Is the “man cave” history? Home theater trends seem to be moving more toward family-friendly, multi-use spaces. But with a custom home, you call the shots on how your media room will look. Love old Hollywood glamour? Go crazy with over-the-top decor. Prefer a modern look? Choose clean-lined contemporary furnishings for your space. Home theaters are the perfect spot to put your personal interests on display. Think sports memorabilia, souvenirs from travel or the huge aquarium you’ve been dreaming of.
